Meet The Baya Weaverbird
On 07/19/2025 09:00 am by Shaurya Salunkhe | Website | Khed Shivapur, Maharashtra, India
This was my first time seeing and capturing a Baya Weaverbird. They are quite chattery and chirp loudly during the monsoon season here in India. There nest are often seen intall treees in open grasslands or above waterbodies to stay protected. This one in my image is a male, which can be identified due to its vibrant colors. The female on the other hand is of a light brown color and quite shy usually hidden in the nest. What makes these birds unique is there style of nest building, they intricately weave these peculiar nest made of long fry grass strands using there claws and beak alone. The males make the nests and have initially two openings, one which is seen in the image and one at the bottom. Once a female chooses the next, the bottom hole is sealed off. Truly fascinating creatures which sadly are seeing a decline in population due to habitat loss.
