The Murres of Pirate Cove
On 04/18/2026 12:43 pm by Cecille Kennedy | Pirate Cove, Oregon
Today the murres flew from the sea to the tall rock, and they stand shoulder to shoulder vocalizing in their distinct guttural rasping sounds. They look like small penguins thus often called flying penguins. Common murres (Uria aalge) are Oregon’s most abundant breeding seabird. They do not build nests, but rather lay a single pear-shaped egg directly on the rock. They arrive in the area in spring and and depart in late summer.
