Cumulus with Rainbow Pileus and Cloud Shadows betwen 6.07 and 6.10 pm

In the late afternoon on Tuesday 25th February, after a day of mixed overcast with light rain, a prominent cumulus cloud developed behind the foothill of Murahwa Mountain which developed multiple rainbow pilei, bright iridescent clouds and a succession of projected cloud shadows. The spectacular display, which took place between 6.07 and 6.20 pm, was difficult to photograph due to very high contrast between the dark silhouette of the rising cumulus cloud and bright glare from the sun setting behind it. However, the accompanying montage successfully captures what happened during the first three minutes.
