Japanese Red Maple Samaras
On 06/08/2024 06:13 pm by Stephen Bloodsworth| Montgomery County, Maryland
Though it sounds like a cocktail, the wing-shaped seeds of maple trees are called samaras. Sometimes these seeds are also called twisters, helicopters or whirligigs. To see these seeds fall is to witness the gracefulness of nature. I caught the Japanese red maple samaras pictured here backlit by the late afternoon sun, their redness in full display.
