The Great Aurora Hunt

On 05/11/2024 09:01 pm by Ken Nuckolls| Sikeston, Missouri, USA

Ken and Kevin hunt the elusive Aurora Borealis - - 10pm-2am, Friday night, we headed out west from Memphis, TN on Arkansas Hwy 64 and found a dark spot just a bit northwest of Parkin, Arkansas. We didn't see much of anything. Saturday night, I had researched the Weather Channel and NOAA Aurora Dashboard mightily and decided that our best bet for clear skies AND a view of a weakening aurora scenario was to drive up around Sikeston, Missouri to eat at Lamberts (Throwed Rolls) then go aurora hunting in this most northern part of the Mississippi Delta farms. We first set up camp about 8 miles south of Cape Giradeau, MO, then later moved about 5 miles south hoping to reduce city light pollution. In our first location we were visited by a very lonely and sort of affectionate but mildly feral cat. He immediately did figure eights around Kevin's ankles. He would let us reach down and pet him but would then nip and take a swipe, so we were very careful after that. Anyway ..... all of the photos below after the first two are from our first location Saturday night. We left town about 4:30 and got home a bit after midnight. - All in all, a good time with good company even though the aurora was not especially impressive. We enjoyed dinner, a pretty sunset, the night sky, perfect weather, a lonely cat and I think we sort of saw the southernmost bit of aurora.
