Big Island Nightglow, Borealis, or…?

On 05/11/2024 04:26 am by Brenda Trowbridge| Naalehu, Big Island

I posted several photos on Hawaii Tracker Facebook page but don’t know how to attach the link. I heard that the aurora borealis may be visible as far south as Hawaii and ran outside to check. Sure enough, I found…something! I’ve photographed our horizon at dawn, dusk, midnight, you name it and we live in a very remote location with very little (if any) light pollution. I’ve never seen anything like this before. This was during a time of kp index 8 or 9 forecast for the aurora as far as I can tell from interpretations of UTC time to Hawaii time. The news has begun to pick it up and many have accepted this as borealis, but some have doubted and I’d like to know for certain! According to some sources the aurora were 1200 miles away and most can usually only be seen from 6-620 miles away. We are at 650 elevation and this shot was pointed North Northeast from our little farm just outside Na`alehu, Hi
