This is a male Spotted Towhee. The are members of the Sparrow family and are Robin sized preferring thick brushy vegetation where they scratch through leaf litter searching for food. This one was doing just that when I happened upon it while hiking near the Jordan River. When I paused and kneeled to take a few pictures it flew up into a Russian Olive tree and I got 4 pics of it before it flew away. This was the best shot considering the overcast sky and shooting through the tree limbs.
