I read the Jupiter was in opposition to earth on this date (in EarthSky's daily email newsletter!) so I wanted to go to the dark park and take a look. The forecast was for clear skies and I was looking forward to what I might be able to see. Sure enough, Jupiter was the first bright thing that showed up in the sky, so I aimed my 400 mm lens at it and took a look. I was flabbergasted at what I could see, and shared the view with several people around me! I'd seen Jupiter at this park before (catching the glow of a "setting" planet on the surface of Lake Michigan), but I wasn't prepared for the elation I felt at being able to see some of the moons of this far off world.
