Green And Purple Flash At Sunset
On 10/29/2026 06:09 pm by Cecille Kennedy | Depoe Bay, Oregon
At sunset the when the sun was about to disappear into the ocean horizon an iridescent green flash appeared with purple on the edges. The photos showing the green flash were taken quickly within a second perhaps at 6:10 pm. The half sunk sun on the left was taken at 6:09 pm.
The green flash is an optical phenomenon due to atmospheric refraction where a green point of light appears for one to two seconds just as the final sliver of the sun dips below the horizon. The Earth's atmosphere acts like a prism, bending and separating white sunlight into its individual wavelength colors, and green light is the final visible wavelength left to reach your eye before the sun vanishes. In this case green and purple were the last visible wavelength.
