Fall Fuel: An American Goldfinch Foraging on Autumn Seeds
On 10/23/2026 09:30 am by Nicole Chaps | Parma, Ohio, USA
While enjoying a peaceful autumn hike through one of my favorite parks, I was lucky enough to catch this beautiful moment with a local resident. This American Goldfinch, sporting its characteristic soft, non-breeding colors and a lovely yellow wash around its throat, was completely focused on its breakfast. It balanced gracefully among the wild goldenrod stalks that have transformed from bright late-summer blooms into fluffy, seed-filled plumes. Since these little finches are strict vegetarians, watching them diligently forage for oil-rich seeds is one of my favorite signs of the changing seasons as the local wildlife prepares for the winter months ahead.
