Virga Rainbow IN Tucson AZ

On 10/09/2026 06:15 am by Eliot Herman | Website | Tucson AZ

This is a virga rainbow, rain that does not hit the ground, occurring in the breaking dawn in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains in Tucson. The rainbow is a broken rainbow with a smaller segment of a secondary rainbow. It is quite warm in Tucson and the cloud moisture stayed at altitude evaporating before hitting the ground. This photo was captured with a military prototype Leica lens from the 1970s that contains radioactive thorium glass that improves refractive index. This might be the first time a photograph has been captured with this lens is posted as there are very few extant examples.
