Since oil was discovered here in 1902, I've always thought this shallow, orange-toned, marshy area had an oil seep, but on closer inspection, I saw the creases and tears. Oil doesn't do that.
This thin-film interference optical effect is the result of iron-oxidizing bacteria that ‘eat’ dissolved iron and create a by-product of ferric iron. Decomposing organisms, plants, and algae can also release oils that create similar sheens.
