Deer Lick Group & Steven’s Quintet in Pegasus, 40 to 400 million ly

Deer Lick Group consists of the large galaxy plus the 4 galaxies below. The largest galaxy is by far the closest at 40 million ly away. The 4 smaller galaxies range from 290 to 370 million ly away. Some of the photons captured by my camera took 370 million light years to get here, isn’t that amazing.

Five galaxies make up Steven’s Quintet in the upper part of the pic. Yes, five not four. These galaxies range from 40 to 300 million ly away.

It simply astounds me that I can photograph something so far away and actually see detail.

These two galaxy groups are interesting because they can be photographed together. These galaxies are not gravitationally connected rather they became groups because visually from earth they are close together.

Galaxies often only need R, G and B photos to make mono RGB photo. There are lots of advantages to using a mono camera for astrophotography. Once you make the RGB photo everything generally is the same as for an OSC camera.
