Juvenile Male Ruby-throated Hummingbird Resting on Branch

I've taken countless photos of my resident Ruby-throated Hummingbirds this season—sipping nectar from my flowers, perching on my feeders and even drinking right from my hand feeder. But this shot is a true first for me. I’ve never managed to capture one genuinely resting out in the wild. Finding this sleepy juvenile male puffed up against the morning chill, completely away from the feeders, felt like a quiet little reward for a season of patient watching. I’m soaking up every minute before they depart for migration. Even after our regulars leave, we will remain fully stocked on fresh sugar water and flowers for any of those who make a pit stop in our yard on their journey south!
