Salmon-Orange Scarlet Pimpernel
On 06/25/2026 12:18 pm by Cecille Kennedy | Depoe Bay, Oregon
The scarlet pimpernels finally opened at noon and I chose this stem with 2 flowers. Using the macro lens I pushed the ISO to 2500 hoping to have an image with a softer background against the other weeds on the ground.
Scarlet pimpernel (Lysimachia arvensis) is an exotic, low-growing annual weed that thrives in sunny, disturbed areas all along the Oregon Coast. Their attractive salmon-orange flowers are small about 0.25 to 0.6 inches (6 to 15 mm) in diameter. Salmon-orange color is the most common in the area, but there are also scarlet pimpernel in scarlet or brick red, bright blue, white or pink, which I haven't seen. They open only in bright sun, closing when the sky is overcast, when temperatures drop, and a few hours before dusk.
