I always look for these special trees while hiking. It's a marking post for a resident bear. The claw marks reached approximately 7 feet above the ground and showed a variety of conditions, ranging from fresh to healed and sap-covered. Hair samples embedded in the sap and viewed under a microscope appeared to indicate that we were passing through the territory of a grizzly—another apex predator.
