Southern Pinwheel Galaxy (M83)
On 06/14/2026 08:00 pm by Tameem Altameemi | Website | Al Qou, United Arab Emirates
My image of the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy (M83), captured from the skies of the United Arab Emirates.
M83 is one of the brightest and most active barred spiral galaxies in the southern sky. It lies in the constellation Hydra at a distance of approximately 15 million light-years from Earth. The galaxy is known for its prominent spiral arms, rich star-forming regions, and numerous recorded supernovae.
Because M83 reaches a maximum altitude of only about 36° above the southern horizon from the UAE, I traveled to a remote dark-sky location in the southern part of the country to reduce the effects of light pollution and atmospheric distortion.
The image reveals the galaxy’s intricate spiral structure, bright stellar nurseries, and several faint background galaxies scattered across the field.
