Analemma Sundial

On 06/21/2026 01:35 pm by Lynn Umbarger | Troy, MI USA | 42.6N , 83.6W

I have always had an interest in the Analemma or "Equation of Time", especially in its width. My brothers and I are always quizzing each other on it, and what it would look like on different latitudes and planets (lol). So I designed this experiment in my backyard here in SE Michigan USA (42.6N , 83.6W).
Every 15 days at 12:35p (local noon for us & adjusting for DST), I press a 3" framing nail into the ground beneath the golf ball's shadow and pin down a plastic blade bread tie in the process. I then wrapped a florescent string around each reading to accentuate the Analemma's iconic figure-8 shape. Happy Solstice everyone!
