'Death Come Quickly' Plant

On 06/03/2026 03:52 pm by Cecille Kennedy | Depoe Bay, Oregon

Robert's Geranium 'Geranium robertianum' flower and buds. This is actually a noxious weed in Oregon and Washington. I didn't pull this plant off my yard because the tiny bright pink flower is pretty and I have dried and pressed the graceful leaves when they turn burgundy in summer, laminated and made bookmarks of said pressed leaves. I would add that Robert's Geranium is nicknamed Stinky Bob due to its pungent odor when crushed even lightly especially as you pull them out, but the pungent smell fades quickly with time. There is another nickname for Robert's Geranium from a superstitious folklore-'death come quickly' that is, if you cut the plant and take it inside your house, someone is going to die soon. Of course that's superstition. The plant is not toxic at all, although deer and rabbits avoid it due to its pungent odor and bitter-tasting compounds.
