A Blue Moon Rises Through Fire's Breath

On 05/31/2026 08:24 pm by Jelieta Walinski Ph.D | Website | Carr Canyon, Arizona

A Blue Moon rises above the rugged mountains of Carr Canyon, Arizona, captured from an elevation of 6,656 feet above sea level. Although known as a "Blue Moon," this lunar event displayed a deep reddish-orange hue as it climbed through the evening sky.

This image is a blend of two exposures captured with a Canon EOS-1D X and EF 70–200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens. One exposure was made for the mountain landscape, while a second was made for the Moon itself, preserving detail in both subjects that would otherwise exceed the camera's dynamic range. A slender agave flower stalk, now broken after its bloom, rises quietly in the foreground—a reminder of the life that thrives in this desert landscape.

The Moon's reddish tone was not the result of artificial coloring. A Blue Moon refers to the timing of the full moon within the calendar and not to its actual color. On this night, smoke and atmospheric particles from wildfires burning across parts of North America filtered the moonlight as it traveled through the atmosphere. These particles scatter shorter blue wavelengths more efficiently, allowing the warmer reds and oranges to dominate, much like the colors seen during sunrise and sunset.

The result is both beautiful and sobering: a Moon transformed by conditions occurring far beyond the horizon. As wildfire seasons grow longer and more intense in many regions of the world, even the night sky can carry evidence of our changing environment.

Standing beneath this crimson Moon in the mountains of Arizona, I was reminded that Earth is deeply interconnected. A fire burning hundreds of miles away can leave its signature on the Moon we see above us, turning a familiar celestial companion into a quiet messenger of our time.
