Wings of the Sky Islands

After a sleepless night and a 3:00 AM journey into the unfamiliar mountain roads of Arizona’s Sky Islands, we arrived at the home of George Walker just as dawn painted the horizon with first light. While many photographers travel great distances hoping for a glimpse of the rare Blue-throated Mountain-gem, fortune revealed itself almost immediately in his backyard.

When George asked if there was a particular bird we hoped to see, I answered without hesitation — the Blue-throated Mountain Gem Hummingbird. Before we could even continue toward the next location marked on his map, the mountain gem appeared among the flowers, hovering in a blur of motion. In a fraction of a second, I captured the hummingbird mid-flight, wings flapping like living light as it fed from the blossoms of the mountain garden.

The Blue-throated Mountain-gem is one of the treasured jewels of the Sky Islands — elusive, majestic, and deeply tied to the fragile high-elevation forests of the Southwest. Its rarity is why wildlife photographers and birders patiently search for years to witness it in the wild. Encounters like this remind us that photography is more than collecting images; it is witnessing life that depends on the survival of these habitats.

As climate change, habitat loss, drought, and human disturbance continue to threaten these isolated mountain ecosystems, preserving the Sky Islands becomes increasingly important. Every protected forest, native flowering plant, and undisturbed canyon helps ensure that future generations may still hear the humming of wings from these mountain jewels. Wildlife photography can serve not only as art, but also as a voice for conservation — inspiring people to value and protect the delicate balance of nature before these rare moments disappear forever.
