Circumzenithal Arc!

On 05/18/2026 07:36 pm by David Hawkes | South Yorkshire, UK

Well I must confess, I did have to look this one up, having never seen this effect before. A friend called us and said there was a rainbow. Initially I couldn’t see but it was in the wrong place, ie. directly overhead rather than opposite side of the sky to the Sun (and the wrong orientation).

Circumzenithal Arcs, or upside down rainbows, are formed by the refraction of light rays from ice crystals in formed in cirrus and cirrostratus clouds (which you can clearly see in the photo).
