Positioning the cell phone low close to the ground and the pink seathrift flowers in front of the 93 foot Yaquina Head Lighthouse. This is a 152 year-old lightshouse. Lighthouse keepers in the olden days (1800s) survived through a mix of government rations, local trade, and intense self-sufficiency and lived in a house nearby. Because they were often isolated for weeks, they relied heavily on non-perishable goods and preserved their own food. After the lighthouse was automated in 1966, the military and government no longer needed the housing. All the keeper dwellings and outbuildings were demolished in 1984.
