During a rare severe solar storm in January, I spent the night chasing breaks in the clouds around Banff and Lake Louise before the sky finally opened just before sunrise and the aurora exploded overhead. For the next hour and a half, waves of green, magenta, and white light filled the entire valley as the storm intensified.
This image was captured during one of the brief clear windows, with the lone figure on the frozen lake helping convey the scale of the moment beneath the aurora.
