Sentinel of the Desert Dawn
On 05/01/2026 08:23 pm by Jelieta Walinski Ph.D | Website | Highway 86, Altar Valley / Three Points, Arizona, USA (near Kitt Peak National Observatory), AZ, USA
Along Highway 86 in the Altar Valley near Kitt Peak National Observatory, a towering Saguaro cactus rises from the Sonoran Desert, its arms holding a fragile nest of a Crested Caracara family.
In this single exposure—one frame selected from a full night sequence—the parent caracara rests on the left arm of the cactus, keeping watch over three chicks nestled below. Above them, the stars remain sharp and steady, while a subtle gradient of warm light from the setting Sun lingers along the horizon, marking the transition from day into night.
Captured under the combined influence of fading twilight and rising moonlight, the scene reveals both structure and life: the cactus illuminated just enough to show detail, the nest quietly active, and the sky stretching beyond in stillness.
This moment, though brief, reflects a larger cycle—of care, vigilance, and survival—set against the vast and unchanging backdrop of the desert sky.
