Plato Crater and Vallis Alpes

On 04/26/2026 10:41 pm by Roberto Ortu | Website | Cabras, Sardinia, Italy

In this photo we can see Plato, a crater located on the Moon, with a diameter of about 100 km and characterized by a relatively smooth and dark background. Further east we can see the Lunar Alps with the Vallis Alpes, a huge valley about 160 km long that bisects the mountain range. At the bottom of the image we can see Mare Imbrium, to the north we can see Mare Frigoris and, near the right side of the photo, the Caucasus mountain range.
