four and a half moons

On 04/25/2026 08:12 pm by Tom Tan | Melbourne, Australia

I hope to share with you a picture of moons other than our moon.
Getting a group photo is not easy as the moon moves around every night.

Tonight is two nights too late to have the moon and Jupiter close together.
The lens has to be wide enough the show both in the same frame and sharp enough to show the little moons.

My only alternative is to use a telescope to shoot them separately and then
move them close together with layering. And I could get a sharper image of the moon
with my telescope than my zoom lenses. I didn't have to add sharpness in editing.

Io, the one on top of Jupiter, is about the same size as our moon.

As this photo was taken in Australia, the east side of the moon is on the left side.

The moon: 1/50 second, ISO 100 to show the moon face
Jupiter's moons: 1/4 second, ISO 3200 to show the moons

Because of the difference in brightness I had to shoot two photos.
No editing. Just JPEG. No focusing adjustment.

William Optics 360mm telescope, Nikon D750 full frame camera,
tripod, remote shutter release, exposure bracketing

Two photos of the moon and Jupiter's moons were layered so I could move the moon closer to Jupiter and crop the image.
