"Smart lights"
On 04/18/2026 11:00 pm by Paolo Bardelli | Niederbronn-les-Bains (Alsace-Lorraine), France
I happened to be on a business trip north of Strasbourg, in the countryside of the Grand Est of France. We were staying in Niederbronn-les-Bains, a spa town of 4,500 inhabitants located in the Northern Vosges Natural Park. As an amateur astronomer, I naturally wanted to observe the night sky. I was amazed by the intelligent use of street lighting, turned off from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., which restores night out of respect for nature and those observing the sky. Here in northern Italy, the opposite happens. People want the night to be lit up; they feel safer. But it's a disaster... I wanted to make a small contribution to Dark Sky Week.
