Southern Sky Rotation with Aurora

On 03/14/2026 09:45 pm by Meiying Lee | Website | Queenstown, New Zealand

On the night of March 14, 2026, two auroral substorms occurred, with the Kp index reaching close to 5. I was incredibly fortunate to witness and capture the aurora at 45° south latitude in Queenstown. Unlike the intense and widespread displays commonly seen within the polar regions, auroras at mid-latitudes differ in both color and structure. They are typically more subtle, more localized, and far less frequent—making this display especially rare and memorable.
This image also captures the rotation of the southern sky through star trails, dancing alongside the aurora. The slight wobble in the star trails is caused by vibrations from the wooden balcony floor where the camera was set up, along with the movement of excited onlookers nearby.
Captured between 9:45 PM on March 14 and 2:17 AM on March 15, this image is a stack of approximately 620 exposures taken over 4.5 hours.

620 consecutively taken photos were stacked into a 4.5-hour star trail using Sequator 162r2.
