One of the pair of Florida sandhill cranes that was foraging at the reserve. They are a non-migratory year-round breeding resident. The migratory ones that winter in Florida and nest in the Great Lakes region are the greater sandhill cranes which are the larger subspecies. Both have a striking red patch of skin on their crown and forehead and have distinctive luminous red eyes, white cheek, and gray plumage.
