Jupiter and moon Callisto meet up

On 02/28/2026 09:30 pm by Brian Martin | Website | Riverside CA USA

Jupiter is gaining distance from the Earth and showing a bit more phase and tonight was great seeing with excellent transparency and an event. Callisto made an appearance across the disk. I was very happy to see detail on Callisto and why shouldn’t we if we get details on the others Callisto and its size should be no different only this time the details are peppered white and dark spots. Callisto isn’t this dark but its dark here because it has made its way in front of bright Jupiter. I used the 3x Televue with ADC and filter wheel to bring Jupiter in a little more. Processed it normally and the final smart sharpen in Photoshop is what helps clean the image up. A series of 5 videos were used each 1 minute apart at a gain of 400 with 8.8ms giving me just north of 100fps.
Jupiters SEB (Southern Belt) has a bright disturbance that ignited which is clearly visible at the center here. Lots of Ovals appear to be popping up on the North cap including the faint red mark at the top right. The Great red spot is orange red this season and the belts appear to be darker than the Great Red Spot.
Cheers!
