The N44 Complex in the Large Magellanic Cloud

On 01/19/2026 01:00 am by Helio de Carvalho Vital | Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Located approximately 170,000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud, the N44 complex is a vast stellar nursery spanning 1,000 light-years. It harbors a superbubble—a glowing hydrogen shell 250 light-years wide carved by the collective force of stellar winds and supernovae. The complex exhibits a severe contrast between dark dust lanes and regions of intense star formation, harboring several cataloged objects that define its architecture. Along the upper boundary, a "chain" of bright white knots stands out (from left to right): NGC 1934, NGC 1929, NGC 1935, and NGC 1936. Below then is LH 47, the central hydrogen bubble, while IC 2128 sits isolated to the far right. Below LH 47 is the emission nebula NGC 1937.
