Sunset Rainbow with Cloud Fringe Lighting as Tail
On 01/29/2026 06:40 pm by Helio de Carvalho Vital | Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
A rare combination of two atmospheric optical phenomena is captured in this photo, taken at sunset on 01/29/2026 at 18:40 (UTC-3). Under a sky of intense yellowish hues—caused by the scattering of sunlight through water droplets suspended in the atmosphere—a rainbow segment is visible on the left side of the image. From its lower section, an orange upward branch projects to the right, seemingly outlining the edge of a cloud still exposed to the residual rays of the setting sun. The effects combine to resemble the letter 'V' in the eastern sky, due to pareidolia. A Nikon CoolPix P900 camera was used.
