The Moon Learning to Speak in Light

On 01/20/2026 07:07 pm by Jelieta Walinski Ph.D | Website | Desert Bloom Observatory, AZ, USA

A waxing crescent Moon hangs softly in the evening sky, a delicate curve of sunlight stitched against the deepening blue. Only a few days past new Moon, this slender phase marks the beginning of the Moon’s visible journey—when light slowly returns and night regains a gentle guide.

Scientifically, a waxing crescent occurs as the Moon moves eastward in its orbit around Earth, revealing less than 50% of its sunlit surface. The glowing arc is shaped by sunlight striking the Moon at a shallow angle, while the faint glow on the dark side—earthshine—is sunlight reflected from Earth itself.

This phase invites patience. Each night, the crescent thickens, reminding us that growth in the universe is gradual, predictable, and quietly beautiful—written not in haste, but in celestial rhythm.
