Messier 42 (M42) and Messier 43 (M43) are parts of the magnificent Great Orion nebula, a massive stellar nursery in the Orion constellation, visible as the middle "star" in Orion's sword (the three stars below Orion's Belt). M42 is the main, brightest nebula, while M43 (De Mairan's Nebula) is a smaller, teardrop-shaped section right by it, separated by a dark dust lane, forming one of the closest regions of active star formation to Earth. Both are emission nebulae glowing from intense radiation from young stars, like the Trapezium Cluster in M42, and reveal embryonic solar systems called proplyds.
