Suncups on Ice
On 01/15/2026 09:47 am by Sheryl R Garrison | Website | Southern Alberta, Canada
My first thought upon viewing this ice was that several days of high winds had contributed to the wave-like formation on the pond's surface. It wasn't that, though; it was the sun's work. Suncups are a natural occurrence formed by uneven melting on snow and ice surfaces. Not only are they beautiful, but their occurrence in high altitude environments can also influence plant growth when pollen, seeds, etc., become trapped in the bowls of snow or ice.
