Apparent Rotation of Moon Face
On 01/03/2026 by Mandy Daniels | Website | Derbyshire, UK
Due to the rotation of the Earth over the course of a night, the face of the Moon appears to rotate. It is not something that you might notice immediately, but becomes very obvious in time lapse photography. Changing location on the face of the Earth does the same, hence the Moon can look "upside-down" in the southern hemisphere compared to the north. The set of photos was acquired overnight on 2 - 3 January whilst chasing the Supermoon across the sky, using an alt-azimuth mount which functions similarly to a standard camera tripod, rather than countering the rotation as an equatorial mount would.
