A bunch of bird buddies browsing for breakfast

On 12/31/2025 10:54 am by Randy Strauss | Walnut Creek Lake, Nebraska

With this year's wonky winter, we're seeing hard freezes followed by periods of rapid thaws. The cycle then repeats itself a few days later. As the ice thaws, water birds seek patches of open water where they can feed. This offers a rare opportunity to see many different types of birds in a confined area. This photo shows Canada geese, common goldeneyes, a gadwall, a ring-billed duck, a Northern shoveler, a green winged teal, an American coot, mallards and a lesser scaup. I've provably missed a couple more.

Canon T2i DSLR, Tamron 200-400mm lens at 390mm, f/13, 1/125th second, ISO 100.

Cropped and sharpened.
