Wargentin - Lava Filled Crater
On 01/01/2026 07:07 pm by Mandy Daniels | Website | Derbyshire, UK
The unusual feature, Wargentin is a lava filled impact crater on the south-west limb of the Moon. It is filled with basaltic lava, forming a raised plateau. It can only be seen well every second lunation from any particular location on Earth due to the half day in the moon's 29.5 day synodic cycle.
The enlarged, inset view has been scaled vertically to flatten the perspective distortion caused by the extreme curve of the lunar surface close to its limb. Careful examination of the shadows around Wargentin and the large surrounding craters clearly show it's "inverted" appearance.
