Aurora, the Cloud Monster

On 11/13/2025 07:38 pm by Christoph Stopka | Website | Lake DeWeese, Colorado. USA

After taking photos of the incredible Northern Lights display on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week at a variety of locations, I hadn’t really planned on going out again searching for the aurora on Thursday, especially since the forecast was not so great. But I ended up going anyway, despite thick clouds rolling in. I chose a fairly large, not too populated lake in the vicinity, set up my gear on the South Shore overlooking the lake and took a few test shots, after noticing a faint pinkish-purple glow towards the North. Naturally, the camera revealed much more detail, including nuances of various colors. Yes, the Northern Lights were back again! And they were getting stronger by the minute, adding more colors to the mix.
But soon heavy clouds were drifting into the landscape, changing the look of the scenery drastically. Certainly adding even more drama, when a strange fusion of cloud and aurora started forming, somehow resembling a giant monster in the sky, with its colors pulsating in shades of light pink to an aggressive crimson and finally a Downright scary deep purple, while constantly shifting shapes. Mysterious and absolutely fascinating.
Enjoy!!
