Guardian of the Nectar

On 11/16/2025 12:01 pm by Cecille Kennedy | Depoe Bay, Oregon

A solitary male Anna's hummingbird in our yard guarding the nectar feeder on the deck. The males have a distinctive pink-red patch in a spot called a gorget under their beaks; the bright color also extends over their heads. Any slight movement switches the colors from all glittering hot pink to portions of pink color and glitter of orange, yellow green and magenta.
Anna's hummingbirds stay in the Pacific Northwest all winter. This may be attributable in part to the northward migration of plants that sustain it. But it also may be helped by a steady diet supplied by urban bird lovers: the nectar of hummingbird feeders.
