I had been watching the aurora for hours. I live in a certified dark sky area (Crestone, CO). I'm not an astrophotographer and simply prefer to stargaze in slack-jawed amazement. But when the aurora swung north and east behind the Sangre de Cristo mountains I just had to put a camera on a tripod. As I was shooting this image to include Orion's Belt, Jupiter began its ascension behind Broken Hand Peak (13,573').
