The North America Nebula

On 09/21/2025 11:48 pm by Kanil Nimsara | Colombo, Sri Lanka

NGC 7000 is an emission nebula, dominated by ionized hydrogen (H II region) energized by nearby O-type stars. The nebula spans over 50 light years across, with dense dark dust lanes creating the distinctive continental outline hence its nickname, the North America Nebula. The central "Gulf of Mexico" region is defined by obscuring interstellar dust, absorbing visible light and creating striking contrast against the surrounding hydrogen glow.

At a distance of 2,590 light years, the photons recorded here began their journey during Earth’s Bronze Age civilizations, offering a direct observational link between ancient human history and stellar processes in the Milky Way.

This capture demonstrates how accessible astrophotography has become, even with consumer-level gear.

Used Celestron Nexstar 8se connected with redmi phone to grab this majestic glowing emission nebula. Using the NexStar 8SE’s computerized alt-az mount, careful alignment, and smartphone imaging, it’s possible to document deep-sky structures with surprising clarity.

Used Photoshop to enhance the color of the photo.
