Equus Stellarus ~ The Great Square of Pegasus

On 09/29/2025 08:30 pm by Diane Rains | Website | Hudson, WI, USA

At my latitude in western Wisconsin, Pegasus reaches its Midnight Culmination in late September. At that time, the constellation reaches its highest point in the sky at midnight. For a more precise reckoning, I choose the star Alkarab (Upsilon Pegasi) in the interior of the great Square of Pegasus. To me this modest star is the horse's heart. Its 2025 midnight culmination occurred this morning, September 30.

As both a Druid and a singer-songwriter, I celebrate the Midnight Culmination of the Winged Horse. When I sing with the constellation's stars and nebulae, I gallop through the Universe on equine wings!

How could I do otherwise? This is a horse with heart!

Sonification is the process of mapping a data set or image to sound. Developed by NASA to help in the interpretation of astronomical data, sonification has been embraced by musical artists, as well.

For Equus Stellarus, I created a sonification of three prominent astronomical objects in Pegasus (Einstein's Cross, Elliptical Galaxy, and NGC7331) as well as stars of the constellation itself. AfterGlow Access (idataproject.org/resources/) was the software used to create the sonification. I then combined these sonifications and sang to them.

And the Star Horse took flight!
