The Swirling Edge of a Shelf Cloud
On 08/31/2025 07:04 pm by Jelieta Walinski Ph.D | Website | Desert Bloom Observatory, AZ, USA
After the haboob passed over Desert Bloom Observatory, AZ, the sky unveiled this rare and powerful sight—a shelf cloud. Its dramatic arc stretches like a fortress wall, where turbulent air lifts warm surface winds and forces them into the cooler layers above. To the left, the cloud swirls in haunting spirals, reminding us of the atmosphere’s restless energy. Shelf clouds often signal advancing thunderstorms, fierce winds, and sudden downpours, a breathtaking beauty yet a looming threat. Standing before it feels like gazing at nature’s warning, a sky-scripted poem of awe and danger combined.
