Photobombed by a Night Hawk

Night Hawks are usually very shy when it comes to interacting with humans, and they are generally one of the toughest birds to get a good photo of, due to their habits of flying fast and relatively high and being extremely well camouflaged when they land. Well, I got lucky and didn’t even know it: We had a big thunderstorm rolling through our expansive Wet Mountain Valley and I noticed the beautiful light beams from the sun stretching like giant fingers into the landscape. So I decided to fly my drone up into the sky and get maybe a better angle for photographing the scenery. I sent the drone up to about 400 feet and started hovering and rotating around , looking for the best composition. I started to shoot a few frames via the drone flying high above my head. But suddenly the view on the screen - transmitted from the drone down to the controller in my hands - got very dark for a brief moment. I got worried that my drone might have a malfunction or other problem, and I felt it would be better to bring the drone back to Terra Firma asap. Shortly thereafter the small aircraft landed without incident and I decided to call it a day.
The next morning, when I downloaded the few photos from the drone into my computer, I was absolutely stunned to find that I had been photobombed by an elusive Night Hawk! The bird was most likely the dark shadow that had blocked the drone’s view, when the agile bird swung by the hovering aircraft to get a closer look - providing me with the PERFECT photo! The full landscape with the light beams Plus a Night Hawk? I could have never gotten such a great photo, even if I had tried for a very long time…
Enjoy!!
