This is a Northwestern garter snake half coiled on the side of the walking trail. He kept this position while I took his photos and when I left he was still in the same pose. It was fairly small, about 3.5 to 4 feet (1 to 1.2 meters) long. It's harmless, not poisonous. This snake may produce a mild venom that does not typically cause death or serious illness or injury in most humans, but its bite should be avoided.

The Northwestern garter snake feeds mainly on slugs and earthworms, but also takes insects, small salamanders, frogs, fish, small mammals, and possibly nestlings of ground nesting birds. Source: Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife
