Thunderstorms, Saturn, and a Lunar Eclipse from Both Hemispheres

On 09/08/2025 by Zhouyue (photographer 1), Lucy Yunxi (photographer 2) Zhu (photographer 1), Hu (photographer 2) | Website | Haining, China and Canberra, Australia

This collage image presents a simultaneous capture of the September 2025 total lunar eclipse from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The top image, from the Northern Hemisphere (Haining, China, ~30° N, GMT+8), shows the Moon’s trail arcing from upper left to lower right under clear skies, passing near Saturn. In contrast, the bottom image, from the Southern Hemisphere (Canberra, Australia, ~35° S, GMT+10), records the trail running from upper right to lower left, dramatically set against thunderstorms flashing across the horizon on the left and reflected in the lake. Both views were photographed with 16 mm wide-angle lenses at the same time, and their opposite orientations highlight how hemisphere and latitude shape our perspective on the same celestial event.

Northern Hemisphere: Nikon Z6II + Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 Z-Mount at 16 mm
Southern Hemisphere: Canon R5 + Sigma 14–24 mm at 16 mm
