The Elephant's Trunk Nebula, also known as IC 1396A, is an emission nebula located in the constellation Cepheus, approximately 2,400 light-years from Earth. It is part of a larger region of ionized gas known as IC 1396. The nebula has a dark, elongated shape resembling an elephant's trunk, with a bright rim caused by the illumination from nearby stars. The Elephant's Trunk Nebula is a site of active star formation, containing several young stars, some less than 100,000 years old. The nebula's structure is influenced by the radiation and stellar winds from a massive star, HD 206267, which ionizes the surrounding gas and dust.
