The Crescent Part Points Sunward

On 08/29/2025 02:22 pm by Meiying Lee | Website | Taipei, Taiwan

Since childhood, we’ve been taught that the Moon doesn’t shine on its own—the bright crescent we see is merely the part illuminated by the Sun. Yet, direct evidence of this isn’t always easy to catch. At night, when the Moon is bright, the Sun has already set; during the day, if the Moon is too close to the Sun, it gets lost in its glare, and if it’s too far, their connection is harder to perceive.
Today at noon, about 30% of the Moon was illuminated, standing out clearly against the blue sky. Its angular distance from the Sun was roughly 70 degrees, perfectly fitting within the camera’s frame. From the photo, it’s easy to see that the Moon’s bright part points directly toward the Sun(in the upper right corner.)—a simple and clear demonstration that the Moon’s glow comes from sunlight.
The photo in the upper left corner is the moon taken with a telephoto lens.
